Sons of Beaches @ The George in Daventry

Review by J Appleby

I ventured down to my local, The George in Daventry in August to check out a Midlands band that caught my eye at a previous gig in Birmingham - a four piece by the name of Sons of Beaches.  With appearances at Glastonbudget a few months ago and relentless performances on the Midlands circuit, it appears the band is promoting its latest recording and single to be released at the end of September called “Turn Me On”.

Opening for the band was a local Northampton act called Glory Scars.  I saw their first gig last year and it seems they have come on leaps and bounds with a teeny punk sound.

Sons of Beaches kicked off what was to be a short but sweet eight song set with “Who Am I” and rockin’ opening lyric - “you bring the money and I’ll bring the liquor...taste like honey but we need something sweeter”.

The band probably are tired of being compared to Bon Jovi but to be honest there’s no other way to sum the group up in less than two words.  To elaborate, their music is a contemporary take on classic 80-90s rock with just a pinch of post-grunge complete with rustic vocals and fine tuned guitar solos.  The boys followed up with a few more original tracks including the new single, “Turn Me On” and a slower song called “Sticks-n-Stones” whilst also slipping in a couple of covers which elude to their influences and obvious style - a competent Lynnrd Skynrd’s “Simple Man” and a fully enjoyable Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World”.http://sonsofbeaches.co.uk
