Rustbucket @ Criminally Insane, Daventry

Review by J Appleby

It’s a little known secret but fast becoming a popular night for the scourge that is Northamptonshire’s metal heads...Criminally Insane.

Held on the first Saturday of every month, what started out as just a DJ metal music night is now putting on live bands at the Coach and Horses pub in Daventry.  I caught Criminally Insane’s virgin live music night with local band, Rustbucket, headlining.

Rustbucket is full-on, old school, British heavy metal.  We’re talking influences straight from the 70s and 80s á la Motorhead, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath.  In fact, this four-piece kicked off its set with a skilled cover of Ace of Spades and closed with a slick arrangement of Black Sabbath evolved around War Pigs.
Vocals were traded between bassist, Pete Laurie and lead guitarist, Nick Billingsley - both have that deep, raspy rock style.  They did look a bit rag-tag but there is no doubt about their talent especially drummer, Astrid a.k.a The Tiddler - who looked more like your local librarian but totally masters those skins.  Nick told me that they just re-emerging from a year off after their 2008 UK tour to work on new material and we should be seeing more of them on the circuit.
