Whats at the bar

Real Ales

The Malt Shovel Tavern is renowned for its choice of real ales,
all served to perfection.
The guest ales' board changes every day and
there is normally a large selection to choose from. We try to cater for
all tastes, ranging from relatively low gravity 'session' beers to mind-blowing
strong ales! We also 'grade' our beers as light, medium or dark to make the
customers' choices easier if there are beers they have never heard of.

In addition to our huge offering of guest ales and other drinks we keep
a good selection of favourite 'regular' ales, other beers, lagers and cider.
Under normal circumstances you can expect to find these available at all sessions.

In keeping with our overall philosophy these brews are always served in tip-top
condition.
We are delighted that some of our regular ales are locally brewed by
the
Great Oakley Brewery (for which we are the brewery tap) and the Frog Island Brewery.

Belgian Bottled Beers

Belgium is well known for its large range of bottled beers and the
Malt Shovel Tavern carries a substantial number of them.

Duvel * Chimay Red, White and Blue * Westmalle Dubel * Westmalle Triple * Orval
Corsendonk * Barbar * Forbidden Fruit * Delirium Tremens * Hoegarden Grand Cru
Bacchus Frambozen * Kwak * Gordons Gold * Leffe Bruin * Erdinger German Wheat beer.

English Country Wines

Our wide selection of English Country wines are produced by Vitis Wines in
Oxfordshire.
In the column on the right you will find the entire range of Vitis country
wines. We aim to keep a reasonable selection of these varieties available.

Other Drinks

To complement our reputation for real ale we also offer a larg
 range of
other drinks for those patrons who are not 'real ale' fans!

Our Cellars

The Malt Shovel Tavern is renowned for its real ales and we will never knowingly
sell you a bad pint. The secret of delivering the beer to the customer in perfect
condition is good cellar management. Here at the Malt Shovel Tavern we have
automatic stillage that gently tilts the casks as they empty. Mike Evans, the
owner, is passionate about his products and ff the beer's not right we don't
serve it (and we don't mind you telling us if you think it's not quite right!)

There are 13 hand pumps on the bar serving our selection of guest and regular
beers so there should always be something to tickle your fancy. And if beer
is 'not your thing' then there will be something else for you to enjoy (even coffee).

Over the years we have had literally thousands of different beers.
We cannot list the current offerings as they change too quickly (some beers are
put on pump at 7pm and are gone by the end of the evening or even sooner!)

Additional information

Beer Festivals

Every day is a beer festival at the Malt Shovel Tavern. However,
a couple of times a year we really 'push the boat out' with a weekend-long
beer festival. There's live music, Cornish pasties and a theme to the weekend
(which might be beers from all the breweries in a particular area or all the beers from one particular brewer. You can be sure of a great time.

Our Next Festival

Over the weekend of 1st, 2nd and 3rd May we will be presenting a festival of
beers from Gloucestershire. More details to follow nearer the date!

Do you want to gig at The Malt Shovel Tavern?

If you are a band looking for a gig at the Malt Shovel Tavern you need to be aware that we receive dozens (if not hundreds) of requests. In order to be successful you must bear in mind that our Wednesday night gigs are predominantly Blues and unless your band is a Blues band you are unlikely to be selected.

If you have your own website, YouTube or MySpace entry where we can hear a
sample of your music please let us have link information. Alternatively, send
us a short biography of the band (number of members, presence on the blues
circuit etc) and a sample of your music on a CD. We cannot answer all
requests but if your CD is promising we will get back to you. It may take some
time and bands are booked 12 months in advance.

Please advise what fee you would charge for a 2-hour gig.
